Medication Aide

Medication Aide program is designed to prepare students to provide medication Administration and work under the direct supervision of a licensed health care professional in nursing homes, assisted living centers; intermediate care facilities for the mentally challenged, schools, childcare settings; or patient homes. They provide routine medication by oral, inhalation, topical and instillation routes when appropriate direction and monitoring is provided. Successful completion of an approved Nursing Assistant course (or its equivalent) or six months prior experience working as a Nursing Assistant is required to register for the class. It’s a 75 hour class, 55 hours in classroom and 20 hours in a clinical facility setting. The job includes:

 

1. Responsibilities and liabilities associated with the administration and safeguarding of medications;

 

2. Allowable and prohibited practices of permit holders in the administration and safeguarding of medications;

 

3. Drug reactions and side effects of medications commonly administered and rules for medication aides.
